How to start an Airbnb business in India

Four guides, in order, for people who want to host on Airbnb in India and have not listed yet, and a fifth for hosts already running a listing. Written by an operator running 7 properties in South Bangalore since 2019. Free to read, no sign-up.

What is different about hosting in India

Most Airbnb advice is written for the US or Europe. Four things matter more here.

  • Your housing society. In an apartment complex, the bye-laws and the managing committee matter more than anything on Airbnb. Read the bye-laws yourself before you list.
  • State rules. There is no single national rule for short-term rentals. Check your state before you list, and again every year.
  • Foreign guests. You must file a Form C within 24 hours of a foreign guest's arrival. Register on the FRRO portal before your first foreign booking.
  • Fees and tax. Airbnb takes its host fee from your payout and deducts TDS under Section 194-O. Who pays GST depends on whether you must register. Guide 3 works out what you keep.
